Tax professional reviewing personal income tax return documents and slab calculations

Understanding income tax in Nepal is not just a statutory compliance requirement, it is a critical personal finance skill that directly preserves your net earnings. Under Nepal's progressive income tax system governed by the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), taxable income is evaluated across tiered slabs with specific statutory deductions for retirement and insurance contributions.

Who is Liable to Pay Income Tax in Nepal?

Under the Income Tax Act 2058, any resident natural person earning income from employment, business, investment, or professional freelancing in Nepal is subject to tax assessment if their annual assessable income exceeds statutory baseline thresholds.

Current Progressive Tax Slabs (Individual & Married Couples)

Nepal operates a graduated tax schedule. Under prevailing fiscal provisions:

1. Individual (Unmarried) Resident Tax Slabs:

2. Married Couple (Filing Jointly) Tax Slabs:

*SSF Exemption Note: Salaried employees enrolled in the contribution-based Social Security Fund (SSF) are formally exempted from paying the 1% Social Security Tax on their first slab under prevailing Finance Act directives.

Statutory Deductions & Allowable Exemptions

Taxpayers in Nepal can legally reduce their assessable taxable income by utilizing allowable deductions before slab rates are applied:

1. Social Security Fund (SSF)

The entire 11% employee deduction contributed to the Social Security Fund reduces assessable income. The employer's 20% contribution is similarly credited without tax friction.

2. Approved Retirement Funds (CIT / EPF)

Contributions to the Citizen Investment Trust (CIT) or Employees Provident Fund (EPF / Karmachari Sanchaya Kosh) can be deducted up to one-third of total assessable income or NPR 3,00,000 per year, whichever is lower.

3. Life Insurance Premium Deduction

Premiums paid on life insurance policies registered with licensed Nepali life insurers are deductible up to a statutory cap of NPR 40,000 per year.

4. Health / Medical Insurance & Remote Area Relief

Health insurance premiums are deductible up to NPR 20,000 per year. In addition, medical tax credits and remote work allowances (Categories A through E) apply to professionals stationed across designated rural districts.
