Orientation

Introduction & Purpose

Banking in Nepal is strictly regulated by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the central monetary authority established under the NRB Act 2058. Whether you are depositing emergency cash into savings, locking high returns in Fixed Deposits (FD), or executing real-time QR payments at retail stores, understanding how financial tiers work, how deposit insurance safeguards your capital, and how interest compounds daily is foundational to smart wealth management in Nepal.

Chapter 01

Understanding Financial Tiers: Class A, B, C & D

NRB categorizes financial institutions into four tiers based on minimum paid-up capital and operational scope: Class A Commercial Banks (वाणिज्य बैंक - minimum capital NPR 8 Billion) offer full retail, corporate, foreign exchange, and letter of credit (LC) services. Class B Development Banks (विकास बैंक - national level minimum NPR 2.5 Billion) operate across provinces with strong regional presence. Class C Finance Companies (वित्त कम्पनी - minimum NPR 800 Million) focus on hire-purchase, leasing, and consumer credit. Class D Microfinance (लघुवित्त) deliver rural group lending and poverty alleviation.

Which Tier is Safest?

All Class A, B, and C banks operate under uniform regulatory reserve requirements (CRR, SLR) and liquidity monitoring by Nepal Rastra Bank.

Chapter 02

Deposit Safety & The NPR 500,000 Guarantee Fund

A vital protection that many Nepali savers overlook is the Deposit and Credit Guarantee Fund (निक्षेप तथा कर्जा सुरक्षण कोष). Under NRB directives, retail savings and fixed deposits held by individuals in licensed Class A, B, and C banks are statutorily insured up to NPR 500,000 per depositor per institution. In the event of a bank distress or liquidation, your deposits up to NPR 500,000 are guaranteed by law.

Multi-Bank Diversification Strategy

If you hold NPR 15 Lakhs in liquid cash, splitting NPR 5 Lakhs across three different licensed commercial banks provides 100% statutory guarantee coverage on your entire capital.

Chapter 03

Savings vs FD vs Recurring Deposits (RD)

Savings Accounts provide daily liquidity with modest interest. Fixed Deposits (FD - मुद्दती निक्षेप) lock capital for 3 months to 5 years at higher interest rates. Recurring Deposits (RD) allow salary earners to auto-debit a fixed amount (e.g., NPR 5,000) every month into an FD-grade interest instrument. By NRB directive, interest on savings accounts must be computed on a Daily Minimum Balance basis and credited to customer accounts at least quarterly.

Daily Minimum Balance Rule

Banks cannot calculate interest on your lowest monthly balance. Every rupee sitting in your account earns interest for the exact number of days it remains deposited.

Chapter 04

Digital Banking Infrastructure: connectIPS, Mobile Apps & QR

Nepal's payment ecosystem is powered by National Payment Switch (NPS) and retail payment clearing by NCHL (Nepal Clearing House Limited). connectIPS enables real-time bank-to-bank account transfers. Standard mobile banking apps support interoperable QR scanning (Fonepay, NepalPay) across merchant stores, utility bill payments (NEA electricity, Khanepani), and tax payments to the IRD without transaction fees.

connectIPS Verification

Linking your bank account directly in connectIPS allows single transactions up to NPR 10 Lakhs online, bypassing lower mobile app limits.

Chapter 05

Transaction Limits & Fee Schedules in Nepal

To balance convenience with systemic security, NRB sets standard limits: Mobile banking app transfers are typically capped at NPR 100,000 to NPR 200,000 per day. Web internet banking supports up to NPR 10 Lakhs to 20 Lakhs per day. ATM cash withdrawals are capped at NPR 25,000 per transaction and NPR 100,000 per day. Under NRB rules, using your ATM card at another bank's ATM allows up to 2 free transactions per month before nominal interbank fees apply.

2 Free Off-Us ATM Withdrawals

NRB guarantees that cardholders can use any bank's ATM twice a month without interbank transaction fees.

Chapter 06

Preventing Digital Fraud, OTP Scams & Phishing in Nepal

Financial cybercrime in Nepal has surged with increased mobile adoption. Scammers frequently call posing as bank staff, lottery officials, or digital wallet support, requesting One-Time Passwords (OTPs) or transaction PINs. Legitimate banks and Nepal Rastra Bank will NEVER call you to ask for your password, MPIN, or OTP. Never click unverified SMS links promising festival gift hampers or account unfreezing.

Golden Rule of Cyber Safety

Your OTP is your digital signature. Sharing your OTP is legally equivalent to signing away your cash.
